The TwentySixteen Indie forked theme has some subtle changes both under the hood and visually which we’ll have to begin better documenting in the GitHub repo for those who want to make the jump:

  • Removes WordPress’s Post Formats in preference to the Post Kinds Plugin
  • Adds much improved/proper microformats for IndieWeb use by backporting some changes from the mf2 branch of Underscores (aka _s).
  • If install includes Syndication Links plugin, they display with the author avatar, time/date, post kind, and tags block.
  • Removes the author description block from the bottom of posts in favor of h-card widget
  • Works better with Bridgy Publish plugin out of the box.

There aren’t a huge number of changes, so reading the GitHub list isn’t a bad exercise. It appears to be an excellent cookbook for how to convert other themes into more IndieWeb friendly versions, especially for those trying to add better microformats support which can be taxing at times. It’s making me itch to revisit some prior themes I was working on forking in the past including TwentyTwelve, TwentyFifteen, and Minnow.
