A 50 minute documentary following filmmaker & Class of ’82 John Muir High Alumnus, Pablo Miralles (“Gringos at the Gate“) as he questions what has happened to his once diverse alma mater and whether or not to send his own son to the school today. In the film, Miralles explores the complex history of Pasadena’s schools and the 1970 court order that created the first Federal desegregation plan outside of the south. Weaving stories from alumni, administrators, and civic leaders of John Muir High School’s multi-cultural community, Miralles illustrates the challenges and failures of California, and the United States, to promote well-funded and diverse public education.

Andy Fragen from WordCamp Orange County 2019Every version of PHP from 7.0 and below has been designated end of life (EOL). Currently, WordPress’ minimum PHP requirement is 5.2.7 which was EOL’d over 8 years ago.
In the 2018 State of the Word Matt said we would be moving to PHP 5.6 as a minimum requirement in April, 2019 and increasing the minimum to PHP 7.0 by the end of 2019.
This presentation will attempt to describe the safeguards put in place to avoid breaking the internet.
While they may often seem highly technical (but really aren’t), Andy’s talks are always great because he helps to uncover some of the very subtle clues to unwinding the WordPress community, how it works, and how to more easily participate in and contribute to it at more advanced levels. While I get a lot of fun technical tidbits out of his talks, it’s really the culture portions that are subtly far more important.

Great overview presentation, but a tad on the elementary side for me. John generally does a very solid job, but here I think he spent too much time on talking about other ways of doing things as a means of motivating why to use the REST API instead of talking about the REST API itself.
I did get the chance to meet a great programmer and developer named Beth who was previously in the area of instructional design.

Directed by Corey Allen. With Angela Lansbury, Eddie Barth, Jessica Browne, Bert Convy. Former English teacher Jessica Fletcher travels to New York to celebrate the success of her debut novel, but when an unwanted guest is murdered at a costume party, she wishes she'd stayed home.
A generally entertaining pilot episode, but there were several painfully obvious moments that played out over a much longer time frame than they should have. Interesting to see Ned Beatty doing television here and playing the dumb detective. Seeing Bert Convey was entertaining as I hadn’t thought about him for decades.

Luke and Acts, a two-volume work, are structured very carefully by the author to outline the ministry of Jesus and the spread of the Gospel to the gentiles. The Gospel of Luke emphasizes the themes of Jesus’ Jewish piety, his role as a rejected prophet, and the reversal of earthly status. The Gospel ends in Jerusalem, and the Acts of the Apostles begins there and then follows the spread of the Gospel, both conceptually and geographically, to Samaria and the gentiles. By closely analyzing the Gospel and Acts, we see that the author was not concerned with historicity or chronological order. Rather, he writes his “orderly account” to illustrate the rejection of the Gospel by the Jews and its consequent spread to the gentiles.

I’ve either seen or read about large portions of the stories in this documentary, but even then this goes into a bit more depth than some of the vignettes I’ve read about. It also does a great job of aggregating these stories into a broader story arc. A stunning bit of documentary work. I recommend this highly.
It is painful to watch the destruction of lives and value over several hundred years here however.
I was entertained to see the documentary re-appropriate The O’Jays song For The Love of Money to highlight African American entrepreneurship as it was obviously horrifically misused in NBC’s The Apprentice.
