A gut-wrenching episode to be sure. It took me several attempts to make it through. Definitely an example where art has a place in helping to shape and change our lives.

Somewhat interesting to note that the source for the web page for this episode includes the non-standardized meta data "sameAs":"http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103396/". This feels reminiscent of the function of the microformats for u-syndication or rel-syndication which gives the folks at the network a trail to the copy of the data for the episode that they likely syndicated to imdb.com so that it’s findable there. Sadly, the URL link incorrectly points to a page for Dateline, so I’m not sure if their data is pointing to the right place, though it appears that the data for the episode on imdb.com is correct for this episode. It would also be nice if they were using the correct markup so that web parsers and crawlers would pick up the data properly.

These episodes don’t really do a very good job of selling the stronger ideas in her books. They’re vaguely entertaining, but could be much more content rich, particularly with the outlines and details she’s got in her source material. The problem is compounded by the fact that the families they’re featuring aren’t really that interesting or watchable.

Watched January 9, 2019 | Amanpour and Company from PBS
Christiane Amanpour speaks with former U.S. Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel about what's at stake for the country; and film director Barry Jenkins about his new film "If Beale Street Could Talk." Michel Martin speaks with U.S. Rep. Stephanie Murphy about diversity and immigration.
I particularly like the discussion that Jenkins had toward the end of his interview and the example that he gave about a particular television show dedicating itself to only hiring female directors as a means of providing opportunity and then those women going on to direct other works. The thinking about the process portion definitely needs to be happening to create the change we all deserve.
