Thoughts on open notebooks, research, and social media

I remember thinking over a decade ago how valuable it would be if researchers kept open notebooks (aka digital commonplace books) like the one Kimberly Hirsh outlines in her article Dissertating in the Open: Keeping a Public Research Notebook. I'd give my right arm to have a dozen people in research areas I'm interested in…

I'm curious if you use Inoreader's OPML subscription functionality at all? It's kind of like Twitter lists in a sense, but a lot more open and distributed. Much like your version piped into an LMS, it could be used used to create a planet of all of the participants in a course, but set up…

A Followers Page on My Personal Website using Webmention

I've had a following page (aka blogroll on acid) where I list all the websites I'm following in my feed reader (along with OPML files for those who'd like to quickly follow them as well), but last night I quickly mocked up a followers page as well. It lists people who have either added me to…

👓 How to decentralize social media—a brief sketch | Larry Sanger

Read How to decentralize social media—a brief sketch by Larry SangerLarry Sanger (larrysanger.org)
The problem about social media is that it is centralized. Centralization empowers massive corporations and governments to steal our privacy and restrict our speech and autonomy.
Highlights, Quotes, Annotations, & Marginalia The social media browser plugins. Here’s the killer feature. Create at least one (could be many competing) browser plugins that enable you to (a) select feeds and then (b) display them alongside a user’s Twitter, Facebook, etc., feeds. (This could be an adaptation of Greasemonkey.) In other words, once this…

🔖 Personal sites are awesome

Bookmarked Personal sites are awesome by Andy Bell (personalsit.es)

Personal sites are awesome, so this site was built so we can all discover each others. All the links are by folks that want to share their site with the world.

If you want your site to appear on here, go ahead and submit it on GitHub, or drop me an email.

I just ran across this interesting version of a directory which is being built based on a GitHub repo and deployed to https://personalsit.es/.  It's built by Andy Bell who has been building his own website and is at least IndieWeb aware. I've added the example to the IndieWeb wiki page for directories. While interesting and useful,…

Great post Aaron. I'll also say thanks for including me in such an illustrious list. But to the others, I'll suggest that you're holding out on us. The meatier list he's hiding is at: https://readwriterespond.com/wp-links-opml.php Throw it into a feed reader like Inoreader that will let you import or subscribe to OPML lists and then…

Some thoughts about Media Diets prompted by Paul Jacobson

Replied to Keeping track of my media diet by Paul JacobsonPaul Jacobson (Paul Jacobson)

This idea of tracking my media diet really appeals to me:

Just like last year, I kept track of almost everything I read, watched, listened to, and experienced in my media diet posts.

Jason Kottke

I follow a few people who do this too, sometimes pretty publicly. I’m not sure that I’d want to share everything I consume, but I do like the thought of capturing, and aggregating everything.

I’m just not too sure how to pull it all together, if I were to do this.

There are a few parts to having a media diet: 1. keeping track of it all quickly and easily; 2. going back to contemplate on it and deciding what may have been worthwhile or not; and 3. using the above to improve upon your future media diet instead of consuming the same junk food in…

@bradenslen I looked through that giant feed which you described as a firehose, which it certainly is. Oddly, I didn't see Dave Winer, even in the Bloggers section. Maybe there's a story behind that.
@Ron Doesn't anyone worth their salt have http://scripting.com/ open all day in its own browser tab? ;) Separately, but somewhat related, that big firehose OPML feed also has lots of private feeds hiding inside of it that aren't public facing.

Reply to Damian Yerrick about leaving Tumblr and recommendation engines

Because of the decentralized nature of the IndieWeb, it's most likely that more centralized services in the vein of Indie Map or perhaps a Microsub client might build in this sort of recommendation engine functionality. But this doesn't mean that all is lost! Until more sophisticated tools exist, bootstrapping on smaller individually published sorts of recommendations…

Using Inoreader as an IndieWeb feed reader

It may still be a while before I can make the leap I'd love to make to using Microsub related technology to replace my daily feed reader habits. I know that several people are working diligently on a Microsub server for WordPress and there are already a handful of reader interfaces available. I'm particularly interested…

Following local Altadena and Pasadena News

I've been thinking more about local news lately, so I've taken some time to aggregate some of my local news sources. While I live in the Los Angeles area, it's not like I'm eschewing the Los Angeles Times, but I wanted to go even more uber-local than this. Thus I'm looking more closely at my…

Twitter list for #UnboundEq

Replied to Twitter Scavenger Hunt by Catherine CroninCatherine Cronin (Equity Unbound)
This activity is a great way to jumpstart community and networked learning using Twitter. Anyone interested in #unboundeq is welcome to join in this activity – we encourage educators and students in various classes and open participants take part!
A Twitter List I started a bit of the Twitter scavenger hunt for Equity Unbound early this morning by creating a Twitter list of people who have been participating thus far with the #unboundeq hashtag. For those new to the Twitter scene in education, knowing about Twitter lists, how to build them, and how one…

👓 My Feedly wishlist | Paul Jacobson

Replied to My Feedly wishlist by Paul Jacobson (Paul Jacobson)
Richard MacManus wrote about the state of feed readers as he saw it in his AltPlatform.org post titled “The state of feed readers”. He mentioned a couple things in his Feedly wishlist that prompted me to think more about what I’d like to see added to Feedly.
Feedly and custom sharing Apparently there were a bunch of us thinking and writing about feed readers and the open web a year ago last June. Several week's prior to Richard's article, I'd written a piece for Richard's now defunct AltPlatform entitled Feed reader revolution (now archived on my site), which laid out some pieces similar to Paul's…

Hello in today’s first daily update I wanted to share about RSS if you wanted a little background here you go:
My feeds for the class would be: for the tag edu522: https://boffosocko.com/tag/edu522/feed/ for the dailyponderances: https://boffosocko.com/tag/dailyponderance/feed/ I don't have everyone in it yet, but I've started an OPML file for the class that one could use to subscribe to in Inoreader. Otherwise you can save the file (typically with the extension .xml) and upload it…
