President Trump called the firing of Andrew G. McCabe, the deputy F.B.I. director, a “great day for democracy.” Mr. McCabe said his dismissal was for political reasons.

I’d only heard partisan sniping and about Tweets prior to this. Nice to have some history and better detail to hang on to here.

The growing prominence of The Atlantic's national correspondent Ta-Nehisi Coates means that he's often asked to comment on matters on which he lacks expertise, but he demurs. In a conversation with The Atlantic's editor in chief Jeffrey Goldberg, recorded in front of an audience at South by Southwest in Austin, Coates explains why he isn't interested in interviewing Donald Trump, why he cannot use Twitter ever again, and how his complicated feelings about America inflect his writing for Captain America.

As ever, an interesting conversation on The Atlantic Interview.

👓 Trump’s Abrupt ‘Yes’ to North Korea: The 45 Minutes That Could Alter History | The New York Times

Read With Snap ‘Yes’ in Oval Office, Trump Gambles on North Korea by Peter Baker and Choe Sang-Hun (nytimes.com)
How President Trump threw aside caution and agreed to meet with North Korea’s Kim Jong-un in a daring and risky diplomatic gambit to end a nuclear standoff.
It kills me that a year and change in, they still can’t get their act together to coordinate major moves like this. Our country is not a race car that stops on a dime or turns very quickly. Trump may want it to, but it’s not going to do it easily. He’s also likely to destroy a lot of value in our economies by playing bull in the china shop.

I’m still astounded that he’s managed to keep any businesses afloat when making snap decisions like this. It’s really his family’s incredible wealth that in large part has prevented him from reverting to the mean over his lifetime. I can only imagine what additional damage he might do if he actually had any executive capabilities.

If I were his Secretary of State, I’d be resigning and then doing some additional speaking out of school.

A complex system has developed to mute women who accuse powerful men. One of those women is an actress who said she had an affair with Donald J. Trump.

These types of horrific tactics should be outlawed.

"We do not take kindly to these threats," said Michael Avenatti, an attorney for adult-film star Stormy Daniels, who is suing President Donald Trump. President Donald Trump's lawyer is trying to silence adult-film star Stormy Daniels, obtaining a secret restraining order in a private arbitration proceeding and warning that she will face penalties if she publicly discusses a relationship with the president, NBC News has learned. The new pressure on Daniels, whose real name is Stephanie Clifford, comes a day after she filed a lawsuit in a Los Angeles court alleging that a nondisclosure agreement she made to keep quiet about an "intimate" relationship with Trump is invalid because he never signed it.

Frustration on several fronts aided the president's tariff decision
A bit of a click-bait headline, but the general coverage of the lack of planning around this is astoundingly inept. Stories like this shouldn’t exist in the opening days of an administration much less a year in. His one primary campaign platform was that he was such a great leader and it seems to be his worst possible attribute.

I spoke the truth for the sake of every conservative disgusted by what has happened to our movement.
I saw this article pop up over the weekend, but didn’t have a chance to read it. I circled back around to it after listening to The Daily episode from this morning which covered it. Ultimately I think the podcast version was more interesting and valuable.

I appreciate more and more of these dyed-in-the-wool conservatives who are sticking to their guns on the message that the emperor has no clothes. It gives me more hope for the future.

At the Conservative Political Action Conference this weekend, one thing was clear: President Trump has taken over the conservative movement. His vision dominated, and, as one woman learned, there was little room for alternative views. Guest: Mona Charen, a conservative columnist who was booed while speaking on a panel at the conference.

Phenomenal and interesting interview. I think Mona Charen’s broader philosophy about holding one’s own party to the highest standards is certainly the right position. It’s people like her that will have any chance of reviving what the GOP used to stand for. I hope they’re all the better for it as they come out of the ashes.
