If you’re interested, comment or reply to this post, or add your interest and preferred dates to the IndieWeb wiki.
- Date: Sometime in February 2022
- Time: TBD (approximately 3 hours in duration)
- Streaming video/audio platform: Zoom
- Hashtag for the session: #DistributedLibraries
We’ll focus discussion on personal libraries on one’s site(s) and how they can interact with each other. How can we pool data and resources for the common good? How can we provide Goodreads like functionality in a decentralized manner? What pieces are we missing? How can we add them? Are there any easy ways we can standardize the pieces for better site-to-site interoperability? How can we interoperate with other projects like Mastodon and BookWyrm or data sources like Open Library?
Organizationally, depending on attendees and needs we may break our time up into two or three facilitated sub-sessions to focus on and cover specific topics of interest. If you have an idea for a sub-session topic (we’ll operate Bar-Camp style the day of the event) you’d like to see or facilitate please indicate it below.
If you’d like to help facilitate the session or volunteer in running it, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Want to start discussing the topic prior to the session? Feel free to meet up online in the IndieWeb chat.
We’ll try to announce a date around mid-January to provide time for people to reserve the time.
thank you — I’d love to express my interest/availability but I can’t for the life of my figure out how to edit the wiki
For those that need a pointer for logging into the wiki, this may help (you need to use your own domain name): https://indieweb.org/wikifying#How_to_Join_the_IndieWeb_Wiki
I’m happy to add interest on anyone’s behalf, just let me know which dates/times do/don’t work for you.

This looks awesome! I don’t have a domain name, so can’t edit the wiki, but flexible on timing 🙂
This sounds great – I’m in.
Sounds great, man.
@zerok This may be of interest to you. I appreciate some of the work you’ve done on your site towards this goal. https://boffosocko.com/2021/12/25/call-for-interest-indiewebcamp-pop-up-session-on-goodreads-replacements-and-decentralized-book-projects/

@chrisaldrichWhy not something else than zoom since the idea is to have something decentralized 🙂
@chrisaldrich @tripofmice might be interested in this discussion
@liaizon @chrisaldrich thank you! I got tagged on twitter 🙂
@tripofmice @chrisaldrich gotta get that bookwyrm representation out there! my favorite new part of the fediverse
Hey, thanks, Chris!
Thanks Chris! Have shared with all the @openlibrary folks at the @internetarchive
Dude, I’m as into wikis as the next fella but could this be done with a doodle too?
Kev, I’m worried that if I set up a doodle that with this crowd and given the philosophical purpose behind this, your response would be the only one there . Feel free to use any platform you like and send me a notification. Twitter is fine too. If you prefer, pop it onto your own website and send us a notification. Email us. In the end it’s looking like it’ll come down to the day with the most interest.
Ok man 🙂
@chrisaldrich Chris, I have added my name to the event, I hope to have an application to demo. I had some trouble adding an infobox template to my user page using info in indieweb.org/wikifying… would you be willing to help me understand the instructions better?
@AndySylvester It looks like you were close. You want to copy the template (gray box) on indieweb.org/Template:… and edit your user page at indieweb.org/User:Andy… to paste in the template with the appropriate data. Ask for help in chat.indieweb.org/meta if you need more help.
Pick a date. I’ll make it work. I’m going to lose my mind trying to edit this wiki.
Ton Ziljstra is doing some more work on federated bookshelves (additional post here and Github stuff here). Chris Aldrich is also organizing a IndieWeb pop-up session on this topic. I reviewed the my federated bookshelves Github repo today, I came up with requirements and use cases for an app called Booklist Browser. I think my next step is to work on class diagrams…
