Directed by Matthew Weiner. With Aaron Eckhart, Marthe Keller, Louise Bourgoin, Inès Melab. Set in Paris, an ancestral home holds the key to a family's future.
A quirkily plotted little show to be sure. I’m curious to see how it’s structured in the long term given what I’ve heard about it.

📺 Tunisian Couscous | Milk Street | PBS

Watched Milk Street: Tunisian Couscous from PBS
In this episode, Christopher Kimball and Milk Street Cook Lynn Clark cook up a vibrant and hearty North African Chicken Couscous. Milk Street Cook Bianca Borges prepares one of the most delicious and versatile soups in the world, Chickpea and Harissa Soup (Lablabi). To round out the show, Chris teaches us how to whip up Harissa, a pantry staple that is used in countless Milk Street recipes.
Somehow they’re already in season two?! I remember getting the first copy of the magazine ages ago, so I shouldn’t be so surprised. Kimball is turning out a great product and he’s taking a much different viewpoint. I do miss a bit more of the science background from his Test Kitchen days, but this is very slick, well produced, and has some solid material underpinning it. I’ll have to figure out what to cut out of my rotation to make some room for it.

I notice they’re using a white-labeled version of Vimeo for their streaming video, but it’s marked as private and only viewable on their website.

📺 Coming Home for Christmas | Hallmark Channel

Watched Coming Home for Christmas from Hallmark Channel
Directed by Mel Damski. With Danica McKellar, Neal Bledsoe, Andrew Francis, Lindsay Maxwell. "Lizzie Richfield is at a crossroads when she lands a job as house manager for the exquisite Ashford Estate in the Virginia countryside. While preparing the place for sale, Lizzie plans one final Christmas Eve gala for the Marley family, though they seem to be a family in name only. There's Kip Marley, who never met a party he didn't like; Robert, the handsome but all-business executor of the ...
This one certainly follows all the rules from start to finish. Danica McKellar holds the whole thing together single-handedly. This wasn’t quite as good as Crown For Christmas, but at least the title didn’t quite kill the ending the way the other did.

📺 The Future of SEO is on the SERP | Rand Fishkin | BrightonSEO 2018 | YouTube

Watched The Future of SEO is on the SERP | BrightonSEO 2018 by Rand Fishkin from YouTube

The good news is: the number of searches on Google keeps growing. The bad news is: decreasing clickthrough rates on organic results ( especially in mobile), fewer big companies dominating the world’s Google search results and more results answered entirely in Google’s SERPs.

As Google answers a higher and higher percent of queries in the results themselves and refers out less traffic to websites, we’re all gonna have to think about how we influence search audiences through what Google shows rather than just focusing on driving traffic to our own sites.

A big part of SEO’s future will be on the SERP rather than driving traffic to websites.

Rand Fishkin is the founder of SparkToro - https://sparktoro.com/-and was previously co-founder of Moz and Inbound.org. He’s dedicated his professional life to helping people do better marketing through the Whiteboard Friday video series, his blog, and his book, Lost and Founder: A Painfully Honest Field Guide to the Startup World.

About BrightonSEO
BrightonSEO – is a major search marketing event in the UK. One of our favourite events of the year, This is a superb conference for search marketing professionals, novice or expert. BrightonSEO - https://www.brightonseo.com/ - is a chance to learn from some of the best minds in search, and then rub shoulders with them at one of the friendliest, and largest, gatherings of Digital Marketers in Europe.

Some interesting perspective on the future of the internet from an SEO-related perspective.

While a lot of the net is going to mobile first and the rise of the assistants (Google Home and Amazon Alexa) are taking a lot of eyeballs, I’m curious if the move toward immediate answers is more for the “I don’t have time for more in-depth search because I just want a quick answer” versus buyers and people looking for more depth that are going to prefer desktop or sit-back experiences where they’ll spend some time browsing and/or reading. Are the numbers in this presentation specific to this phenomenon or indicative of something much worse as is predicted in the video?

. It’s never been harder to earn organic traffic from the web’s major players.

. It’s never been more important to make your website (and email list)–rather than someone else’s property–the center of your campaigns.

The second slide point is directly from the video with the “rather than someone else’s property” part quoted and inserted from the audio portion. I love that this is a direct incarnation of the IndieWeb philosophy for business use cases. Earlier this morning I actually heard a radio advertisement use the phrase, “or find us on our socials” with word socials being indicative of a generic term for ubiquitous social media platforms which would presumably include Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Perhaps the fact that companies aren’t directly differentiating social silos in their advertising anymore means that some better social readers would portend a more IndieWeb-first approach? Eventually companies are going to find that maintaining dozens of presences on multiple sites isn’t as cost-effective as just maintaining their one site and perhaps the market drops back to a more distributed web approach?

Wednesday on the NewsHour, Jeff Sessions is fired from his role as attorney general. We examine what that means for the future of the special counsel's investigation into President Trump. Also: The midterm election creates a new balance of power in Congress and exposes deep divides in our nation.

Synopsis of the Sessions firing:
Kellyanne Conway: Trump hates Sessions because he recused himself and couldn’t make the Mueller investigation go away. She makes no mention of any other potential job failings of Sessions.
Judy Woodruff: The new temporary AG has a record of being against the investigation, will he kill or slow-walk the investigation?
Kellyanne Conway: The investigation is winding down. (Where she gets this perception is anyone’s guess.) We don’t want him to impinge on the investigation.

Why didn’t Woodruff take the opportunity to point out the painful circular flaw in the administration’s logic? Why do we need a new person to “not fire Mueller” when the old one was doing just fine at it and there was no other reason given for his firing?

Conway also said this was one of the most accessible administrations in years. Why no pushback on this patent lie? Trump has given far fewer press conferences compared to his recent predecessors, and daily press briefings have trickled into non-existence. This is not transparency.

Trump also complains about a combative press, but he doesn’t even bother to attempt to answer questions at these conferences. He dodges the questions and gives no useful information. They give him some relatively simple soft-ball questions and he can’t even articulate a thumbnail sketch of any of his policies much less detailed descriptions. He’s only got himself to blame for his lack of non-responsiveness.

I’m glad that Judy pushed back on the atrocious way that Yamiche Alcindor was treated at the press conference. Rather than even make a half-assed attempt to answer what was a simple question, Trump attacked her and accused her of asking a “racist question”. How tone deaf can he possibly be? He might have at least come up with an answer that was a lie, but this was just painful to watch.

📺 Chappaquiddick (2017)

Watched Chappaquiddick (2017) from Apex Entertainment
Directed by John Curran. With Jason Clarke, Kate Mara, Ed Helms, Bruce Dern. Depicting Ted Kennedy's involvement in the fatal 1969 car accident that claims the life of a young campaign strategist, Mary Jo Kopechne.
Stunning cast here, but would you expect otherwise from Mary Vernieu? Jason Clark is fantastic. I notice he was born the day before Chappaquiddick. I had to look it up to see that Bruce Dern played papa Joe–stunning. This happened well before I was born, and other than urban lore, I’ve never looked into it much. I’m curious what the generally known facts of the case were and how much was speculation on the part of the film. I’m surprised they didn’t sensationalize more of the potential romantic aspect.
