🎧 Welcome to Farm to Taber! Episode 1: Kestrels & Peanuts | Farm to Taber

Listened to Welcome to Farm to Taber! Episode 1: Kestrels & Peanuts by Dr. Sarah Taber from Farm to Taber

Hi everyone! We're excited for Season One! There's a lot happening in agriculture that connects to major issues in labor, manufacturing, and sustainability.

An interesting first episode. I like that she lays out some of her background and where she’s coming from right up front. I do wish she’d given a bit more detail on it however.

I have been successful with writing poems for the first two days of National Poetry Writing Month, the annual celebration of poetry writing that coincides with National Poetry Month each April. Since I have been writing poetry as one of my 2018 goals (the goal is specifically to publish a poem this year), I thought this was a wonderful opportunity to generate some first drafts of poems in a communal setting as others who are engaging in the same process are sharing their progress via the #NaPoWriMo tag .
I’ve been considering that I ought to write more poetry. Perhaps NaPoWriMo would be the way to go?

🔖 Highly: Highlight to share.

Bookmarked Highly (Highly)
Highlight the web to share the important parts.
Signing up for yet-another-silo. This one has some slick-looking UI and lots of social and sharing integrations. Their shares to Twitter look interesting, but I really wish there were some better ways to share so well to my own website. Sadly, unlike Hypothes.is, it doesn’t have any annotation functionality. I didn’t find my Twitter colleagues like Jon Udell, Nate Angell, or Jeremy Dean on the service through their Twitter integration set up.

After a cursory look, I’m worried what their funding and monetization plans are and where my data will be in just a few years. While it’s certainly pretty, I far prefer the functionality (and community) that Hypothes.is offers, so I’m not moving any time soon. Definitely worth taking a look at for some of its UI features and interactions and future functionality.

👓 The perils of mixing open source and money | DHH

Read The perils of mixing open source and money by David Heinemeier HanssonDavid Heinemeier Hansson (dhh.dk)

Fundraising for open source has become trivial through venues like Kickstarter, so it's natural more projects are asking for money. "Imagine all the good I could do if I was able to work on this full time for the benefit of the community". Yes, let's imagine indeed.

Highlights, Quotes, Annotations, & Marginalia

You’re solving the problems for you and your mates, likely in the simplest way you could, so you can get back to whatever you originally intended to do before starting to shave the yak.
But once there is money involved, work will expand to fill the amount raised (to paraphrase Parkinson’s law).

External, expected rewards diminish the intrinsic motivation of the fundraising open-source contributor. It risks transporting a community of peers into a transactional terminal. And that buyer-seller frame detracts from the magic that is peer-collaborators.

Take Ruby on Rails. More than 3,000 people have committed man-decades, maybe even man-centuries, of work for free. Buying all that effort at market rates would have been hundreds of millions of dollars. Who would have been able to afford funding that?

📺 Just in Time for Christmas | Hallmark Channel

Watched Just in Time for Christmas from Hallmark Channel
Directed by Sean McNamara. With Eloise Mumford, Michael Stahl-David, Christopher Lloyd, William Shatner. A young psychology professor must choose between moving across the country for her dream job or staying in her hometown to marry the man of her dreams. On a foggy December night, she gets little help from a Coachman, who brings her three years into the future and shows her what her life will become.
I started this a few nights back and dozed off late at night. Finished the last 30 minutes tonight.

I don’t think it’s possible for Eloise Mumford or Michael Stahl-David to be more charming. I’m obviously stuck on these holiday movies, but this one seemed even more tempting as I watched the credits for Christopher Lloyd and William Shatner. Sadly Shatner only had a 5 minute role and as a hipster Santa-esque carriage driver with an insane gray surfer-chin-fuzz goatee and a straw pork-pie sort of hat.

The sad part was that most of the plot was a very loose rip-off of Mr. Destiny which is still one of my favorite films.

In all though, it may be one of my favorite Christmas movies in this particular genre now.
